There are times when drilling holes you simply can’t afford to have metal shavings falling onto painted surfaces or into places the shouldn’t be. Mark Simpson demonstrates this time tested machinist practice to keep the metal filings exactly where you want them.
Sometimes you'll need to drill a hole without having the shavings, either fall on paint or into a intake manifold or somewhere else. Good tip to, uh, prevent the shavings from ending up all over the place is to grease the drill bit with a nice heavy based grease, then that will catch the shavings as you're drilling.
