Installing a Holley Carburetor
Mark SimpsonTwo of the most popular upgrades for classic cars are Brakes and engine performance products, and naturally the name Holley is often one of the first thoughts in performance carburetors. We join Mark Simpson in the shop as he upgrades out 1935 Chevrolet project car. Installing a Holley Street Avenger 770 CFM carburetor on a GM ZZ383 engine equipped with a GM 700R4 transmission requires careful attention to both engine performance and transmission geometry.
Before beginning, disconnect the negative battery cable, relieve any fuel pressure, and remove the air cleaner assembly. Disconnect the fuel line, throttle cable, TV (throttle valve) cable, electric choke wire, vacuum hoses, return springs, and any transmission kick-down brackets. Remove the four carburetor mounting nuts and lift the old carburetor from the intake manifold. Clean the intake mounting surface thoroughly and install a new square-bore carburetor base gasket.
Carefully lower the Holley Street Avenger 770 onto the mounting studs, ensuring the gasket remains properly aligned. Install the mounting nuts and tighten them evenly in a crisscross pattern to the manufacturer's recommended torque specification. Avoid over-tightening, which can distort the carburetor base plate.
Reconnect the fuel line using approved fittings and verify that all connections are secure. Attach the throttle linkage and return springs, confirming the throttle moves freely from idle to wide-open throttle without binding. Connect the electric choke to a switched 12-volt ignition source and reconnect the PCV, distributor vacuum advance, and power brake vacuum hoses.
Special attention must be given to the GM 700R4 TV cable. Unlike older automatic transmissions, the TV cable controls transmission line pressure, shift timing, and internal lubrication. Installing the correct Holley TV cable bracket and geometry correction lever is essential. Improper cable geometry or adjustment can quickly destroy a 700R4 transmission. Adjust the cable according to the bracket manufacturer's instructions, ensuring it reaches full travel at wide-open throttle.
Reconnect the battery and inspect all fuel connections before starting the engine. Allow the engine to reach operating temperature, then adjust the idle speed and idle mixture screws for maximum manifold vacuum and smooth operation. Verify proper choke operation, inspect for fuel or vacuum leaks, and road test the vehicle. Confirm crisp throttle response, smooth acceleration, and proper transmission shift points. A final inspection ensures reliable performance, excellent drivability, and long service life from both the Holley carburetor and the 700R4 transmission.
