Mine is a 1953 MG TD that I’ve owned for 2 years. I bought it after a partial restoration, but had some work to do. During my tenure I’ve had the transmission rebuilt and have changed the stock rear end ratio from 5.25 to 4.3 for use on state roads. Further, I’ve taken the body mostly apart to have repairs made. Now it’s sporting a new two tone paint job.

“Ruby’ is the 55 Ford F100 that I wanted when I was in my early 20’s, but life and family came first. With a perfect body and an older frame-off restoration, it was everything I was looking for. I have been adding my touches to it for the last few years and it will never be done as long as I own her. The HO modified 302 pushes her along quite well while singing her own beautiful song. Ruby turns heads everywhere we go.

This is my first restoration project, but far from my first classic car. My first classic was a ’62 VW Karman Ghia, followed by a ’78 (?) Audi Fox, a ’77 Toyota LandCruiser, ’64 VW Beetle, a ’80 Camero / all of which were 4-speed manual transmission, a ’78 Oldsmobile Delta 88 (still had the original window sticker) automatic transmission, to name a few — all are long gone. (Sad face emoji) I am older now and in a much more responsible position for classic restoration! I’m looking forward to working with other enthusiasts in the Classic Car Restoration Club!

The car is a 1939 Cadillac V-16 Series 9023 7-Passenger Sedan. Only eighteen frames were produced and only seventeen cars were completed. This car is one of five known to have survived. Four in the United States, and one in Europe. It is the only one with the original interior. It is believed the vehicle had ended up with the US Military and placed into service as a vehicle for a Four Star General. (I have not been able to learn which Four Star General, thus far.) On December 8th, 1941, the day after the Pearl Harbor Attack, President Franklin Delano Roosevelt traveled from the White House to Congress, in order to give his famous ‘Infamy Speech’. The United States Secret Service, USSS, whose job it was to protect the President of the United States, were still concerned that the attack on Pearl Harbor may be part of a larger plan to complete a Coup d’Etat of the United States Government. For that reason, the USSS refused to allow FDR to travel to Congress in either of the Presidential Limousines, 1938 Cadillac V-16 convertibles, dubbed Queen Mary, and Queen Elizabeth. Both Presidential Limousines had soft tops and it would be very difficult to protect FDR from bullets that may be fired at the President in a Presidential Motorcade. For safety, the USSS requisitioned a 1939 Cadillac Series 9023 hard top from the US Military fleet. This vehicle was used to transport FDR from The White House to Congress for his speech. An old black and white photograph, taken that date, of the 1939 Cadillac Series 9023, with Secret Service Agents on the running boards, being forward flanked by an armed trio of males on motorcycles and with at least one of the two 1938 Presidential Cadillac convertibles following closely behind, is shown exiting the White House grounds. With exception to the color of the vehicle, and the black wall tires, all other items on the car match perfectly to this 1939 Cadillac V-16 Series 9023.
When the Four Star General retired to Colorado Springs, he was allowed to purchase this 1939 Cadillac V-16 Series 9023 from the military for $1.00. Initially I believed this story to be untrue based on the purchase price. However, in speaking to military personnel in several different states, I have been assured that this was and still may be common practice.
The 1939 Cadillac V-16 Series 9023 is body #7, and is the earliest body and motor with matching numbers, as verified through Cadillac research center. The remaining four 1939 Cadillac V-16 Series 9023, believed to be bodies #4 (not original motor, reportedly V-16 swapped to a 350 V-8), #8, #10, and #18, have all been repainted, reupholstered in leather, vinyl, or a newer broadcloth. This 1939 Cadillac V-16 Series 9023 still has the original upholstery with small areas that have been repaired, but not entirely replaced. The vehicle was repainted from OD Green to Antoinette Blue, in 1961, which reportedly was the original color. I have since done some preliminary investigation into the VIN 5290062 and the vehicle plate. Cadillac states the original color was Humpback Gray, however, of all of the paint chip pages for 1939 Cadillac V-16’s, I have located to date, I have been unable to locate the color Humpback Gray, nor find any literature that says Humpback Gray was a color choice for that car, or any other car for that matter.
After the passing of the Four Star General, the Cadillac was passed down to the daughter, unknown name at this time, but I do have paperwork someplace that has her name and old address. In the mid-nineties, the daughter sold the vehicle to David Beshany, a Police Officer from Pueblo, CO. Over a decade later, Officer Beshany sold the car to me, as he was leaving the area to pursue a new career as a Personal Body Guard.
I have learned that the daughter moved to Denver, CO, but have been unable to locate a correct address or phone number in order to obtain more information about this vehicle. I was able to learn that the daughter is now in her very late 90’s, or perhaps a centenarian. When I retire from the Pueblo Police Department in July of 2021, I will look into the history of this Cadillac in more detail.
