A-Body Kick Panel Removal

We join Mark Simpson and Doug Sjogren in the shop where they take on the task of removing the kick panels on a 1968 GM A-body (Chevelle/Tempest/Cutlass/GS) the process is straightforward if you follow a few organized steps and have basic hand tools: Phillips and flat screwdrivers, 1/4" and 3/8" socket sets, needle-nose pliers, and a trim tool or putty knife.

1. Prep: Park on level ground, set parking brake, disconnect the negative battery cable if you’ll be working near wiring. Move the front seats fully rearward for driver’s-side access and forward for passenger side.

2. Remove lower door sill and threshold plates: On many A-bodies the kick panel is tucked under a metal sill plate or scuff strip. Remove the visible screws and lift the sill outward. Retain screws and any foam or weatherstripping.

3. Unfasten kick panel screws/clips: Locate Phillips screws along the panel edge and under the dash. There may be push-in trim retainers. Use a trim tool or flat screwdriver to pry the clips straight out. Keep track of clip types for reinstallation.

4. Disconnect accessories: If the panel houses the vent, ashtray, courtesy light, or radio wiring, carefully pull the panel outward just enough to access connectors. Unplug vacuum lines (label them) and electrical connectors.

5. Remove panel: Once fasteners and connections are free, pull the panel outboard and downward; it should come free of the dash and carpet lip. Inspect clip holes and replace broken clips. Clean mounting surfaces before reinstalling.

Reassembly is the reverse: reconnect wiring/vacuum, align panel under sill, press clips in, reinstall sill plates.

While many of us may never need to remove the kick panels on our classic cars, it is a necessary step if you plan to replace carpets, service vents or even upgrading the kick panels to versions with front speakers and an important skill to learn to prevent damaging kick panels during removal or replacement. Many other makes and models use a very similar process to service this important part.
